Vilnius Book Fair

Vilnius book fair’18

READING LITHUANIA – READING THE WORLD

In 2018 Lithuania celebrates the 100th anniversary of the restoration as an independent state. This date is of special importance to Lithuania and its people – it marks the anniversary of the long road walked by the Lithuanian nation towards a free and independent State.

The Vilnius Book Fair will become a great opportunity to evaluate and feel how the country and the people of Lithuania have been changing, how they have lived, and which Lithuanian and world authors, personalities and texts have affected them over the last hundred years. At the same time, there will be an opportunity to discuss, research and talk about what kind of Lithuania and the world we will create through reading over the next hundred years.

Topic 2017: Lithuanian signs visible abroad

Every year the Vilnius Book Fair and its cultural programme is devoted to a special topic. The theme of the next Vilnius Book Fair will show to its visitors how many people of Lithuania, who left their motherland by force or at their own will, are making the name of Lithuania famous in the world.

Vilnius Book Fair 2017 will try to find the Lithuanian signs in the world and to read them and at the same time to see how much we have discovered, created, experienced, how much presence of Lithuania is in the world.

The International Vilnius Book Fair is the main annual meeting place of publishers, authors and readers, it is the well-known cultural activity in Lithuania, the biggest and most important book fair in the Baltic countries. The Vilnius Book Fair is exclusively focused on the reader, books and cultural events. At the same time this is the right place to get acquainted with the pubishing market of the Baltic region.

The biggest book fair in the Baltic countries:  each year over 300 publishers, book traders, etc take part in the Vilnius Book Fair, the event is attended by more than 60.000 visitors. The total area of the Fair is over 12.000 sq.m.

Another thing that makes the Vilnius Book Fair so famous is the usually long and impressive list of its foreign guests, and the broad cultural programme. The Fair has been visited by such stars of the literary and culture world as Alessandro Baricco, John Irving, Andrei Makine, Jostein Gaardner, Joanne Harris, Melvin Burgess, Sofi Oksanen, Yuri Slezkine, Mike Gayle, Etgar Keret, David Foenkinos, Tahir Shah, Alberto Angela, Colleen McCullough and many others.

FOCUS: CHARACTER IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR

The International Vilnius Book Fair is the main annual meeting place of publishers, authors and readers, it is the well-known cultural activity in Lithuania, the biggest and most important book fair in the Baltic countries. The Vilnius Book Fair is exclusively focused on the reader, books and cultural events. At the same time this is the right place to get acquainted with the pubishing market of the Baltic region.Another thing that makes the Vilnius Book Fair so famous is the usually long and impressive list of its foreign guests, and the broad cultural programme. If the last Vilnius Book Fair raised the problem of absence of the crime fiction genre in Lithuania, the urgent issue of not writing detectives (and probably not reading), in 2016 we will be discussing the most popular books, most attractive characters to Lithuanian readers, and books that do not enjoy popularity. How do writers manage to find common language and do they actually find common language with their readers? There are characters that have changed literature and its understanding, have impacted history and its course. Most people have their favourite characters that inspire them. But there are also characters that are undeservedly forgotten or even unwanted. So, maybe at this year’s Vilnius Book Fair, the undiscovered character will find its author…

Each year over 300 publishers, book traders, etc take part in the Vilnius Book Fair, the event is attended by more than 60.000 visitors. The total area of the Fair is over 12.000 sq.m.
