Seminar for Translators in Kėdainiai

The Lithuanian Culture Institute organizes a practical seminar for translators of Lithuanian literature.

The seminar is held every two years. This year it is taking place for the seventh time.

The event invites translators of Lithuanian literature into foreign languages seeking the latest knowledge about Lithuanian literature who wish to improve their Lithuanian language skills, want to be better informed about current trends in Lithuanian culture, and want to network with Lithuanian writers as and translators from other countries.

30 September, Wednesday

18.00 Šv. Jeronimo (St Jerome) Award Ceremony, Vilnius (Arsenalo Street 3a)

20.30 Depart for Kėdainiai. Autobusas lauks prie Taikomosios dailės muziejaus (Arsenalo g. 3a)

22.00 Arrive in Kėdainiai

1 October, Thursday

10.00 – 10.15 Opening of the seminar. Presentation of the programme.

10.15 – 11.30 Critical trends in contemporary Lithuanian prose; themes; most interesting works of prose, 2013–2015. Speaker: Prof. Jūratė Sprindytė

11.30 – 12.45 What’s new in Lithuanian poetry? Speaker: Virginija Cibarauskė

13.00 – 14.00 Lunch

14.30 – 17.30 About stolen spaces in literature. Excursion to Czesław Miłosz’s birthplace in Šeteniai and Kėdainiai old town. Led by Gytis Norvilas

18.00 – 19.00 Living texts. Undinė Radzevičiūtė and Gytis Norvilas read from their works. (Daugiakultūris Kėdainių centras, Senosios Rinkos Ave. 12)

19.00 – 20.00 Dinner

20.15 – 21.30 Literary brain exercises

21.45 – 23.00 Film evening. Screenings of Vienatvės gaudesys (The Din of Loneliness; Dir. A. Marcinkevičiūtė), Poetas Antanas A. Jonynas (Poet Antanas A. Jonynas; Dir. Juozas Matonis and Vytautas Damaševičius)

2 October, Friday

10.00 – 10.30 Presentation of the activities of the Lithuanian Culture Institute as well as new projects and translation programmes. Presenters: Aušrinė Žilinskienė and Kotryna Pranckūnaitė

10.30 – 11.30 Success stories: how translations of Lithuanian literature travel around the globe. Vytenė Muschick, Marija Čepaitytė, Aušrinė Žilinskienė, and Kotryna Pranckūnaitė share project success stories.

11.30 – 12.00 Coffee break

12.00 – 13.15 Narratives in contemporary playwriting. Speaker: Goda Dapšytė

13.30 – 14.30 Lunch

14.45 – 16.30 Who’s translating what? Participants share experiences and talk about current projects

17.00 – 19.30 Performance: Vertėjas (The Translator; Dir. Alicia Gian and Marius Mačiulis). A discussion of the play with its author Laima Vince will take place after the performance.

20.00 – 21.00 Dinner

21.00 – 22.00 Film screening. Radviliada (The Radziwiłłiad; dir. Ramunė Rakauskaitė and Jonas Trukanas)

3 October, Saturday

10.00 – 11.15 Important trends and themes in children’s and young adult literature; themes; interesting new works. Presenter: Docent Kęstutis Urba

11.15 – 12.00 Discussion of the seminar and future guidelines for collaboration.

12.30 – 13.30 Lunch

14.00 Depart for Vilnius
